Anomalous High-Energy Waterfall-Like Electronic Structure in 5 d Transition Metal Oxide Sr2IrO4 with a Strong Spin-Orbit Coupling

چکیده
The low energy electronic structure of Sr2IrO4 has been well studied and understood in terms of an effective Jeff = 1/2 Mott insulator model. However, little work has been done in studying its high energy electronic behaviors. Here we report a new observation of the anomalous high energy electronic structure in Sr2IrO4. By taking high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on Sr2IrO4 over a wide energy range, we have revealed for the first time that the high energy electronic structures show unusual nearly-vertical bands that extend over a large energy range. Such anomalous high energy behaviors resemble the high energy waterfall features observed in the cuprate superconductors. While strong electron correlation plays an important role in producing high energy waterfall features in the cuprate superconductors, the revelation of the high energy anomalies in Sr2IrO4, which exhibits strong spin-orbit coupling and a moderate electron correlation, points to an unknown and novel route in generating exotic electronic excitations.

In this thesis, we were interested in the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and electronic correlations in condensedmatter physics. The spin-orbit interaction has indeed been found to play a significant role in the properties of a growingvariety of materials, such as the topological band insulators or the iridium-based 5d-transition metal oxides. Particularly, strontium irida...
متن کاملRole of spin orbit coupling and electron correlation in the electronic structure of a 5d pyrochlore, Y2Ir2O7
Spin orbit coupling in 5d transition metal oxides such as Ir oxides is expected to be strong due to large atomic number of Ir and electron correlation strength will be weak due to large radial extension of the 5d orbitals. Hence, various anomalous electronic properties often observed in these systems are attributed to large spin-orbit interaction strength. Employing first principles approaches,...

We perform a time-resolved optical study of Sr2IrO4 to understand the influence of magnetic ordering on the low energy electronic structure of a strongly spin-orbit coupled Jeff = 1/2Mott insulator. By studying the recovery dynamics of photoexcited carriers, we find that upon cooling through the Néel temperature TN the system evolves continuously from a metal-like phase with fast (∼50 fs) and e...

A promising route to tailoring the electronic properties of quantum materials and devices rests on the idea of orbital engineering in multilayered oxide heterostructures. Here we show that the interplay of interlayer charge imbalance and ligand distortions provides a knob for tuning the sequence of electronic levels even in intrinsically stacked oxides. We resolve in this regard the d-level str...

The ratio of orbital (L) and spin (S) contributions to the magnetically ordered moments of a 5d transition metal oxide, Sr2IrO4 was evaluated by nonresonant magnetic x-ray diffraction. We applied an improved experimental setting that minimized the experimental error, in which we varied only the linear polarization of incident x ray at a fixed scattering angle. Strong polarization dependence of ...
